Subject: Funding for Theological
Colleges
Moved By: Stephen Andrews
from the Diocese of Algoma
Seconded By: Fred Hiltz
from the Diocese of Nova Scotia
Note: The mover and the seconder must be members of the General Synod and be present in the House when the resolution is before the synod for debate.
BE IT RESOLVED:
That this General Synod request the
Faith Worship and Ministry Committee and the Financial Management and Development
Committee to find ways to encourage the development of national funding sources
for theological colleges.
EXPLANATORY NOTE/BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Theological colleges continue to function to provide theological education either
on site, through distance education programs, or through support of discernment
and training programs for locally raised and ordained leadership for a significant
proportion of the postulants for ordination within the Anglican Church of Canada.
They do so under considerable financial constraint. Further, the lack of national
funding sources makes it difficult for the General Synod to fulfill its mandated
role to provide some national supervision with regard to theological education
in general and theological colleges in particular. This motion enables a process
to be put in place that seeks to explore ways of providing some funding assistance
in a manner that is consistent with the desire to support some national expectations
about core competencies for ministry.
