Subject: Funding for Graduate
Studies in Theological Education
Moved By: Stephen Andrews
from the Diocese of Algoma
Seconded By: Fred Hiltz
from the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
Note: The mover and the seconder must be members of the General Synod and be present in the House when the resolution is before the synod for debate.
BE IT RESOLVED:
That this General Synod request the
Faith Worship and Ministry Committee and the Financial Management and Development
Committee to find ways to encourage the development of national funding sources
for Anglican graduate students studying for an advanced degree in theology.
EXPLANATORY NOTE/BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Current projections suggest that the demand for theological educators will soon
outstrip the supply of qualified candidates. This will have a profoundly deleterious
effect on the Anglican Church of Canada’s capacity to support the training
of its own postulants for ordination. This is an enabling motion to provide
a mechanism to strategize on ways in which funding might be made available to
make advanced theological degrees more accessible and to increase the supply
of qualified Anglican candidates for positions in theological education.
