Resolution Number: A177

Subject: Blessing and Celebration of a Civil Marriage

Moved By: Fred Hiltz from the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

Seconded By: Peter Wall from the Diocese of Niagara

Note: The mover and the seconder must be members of the General Synod and be present in the House when the resolution is before the synod for debate.

BE IT RESOLVED:

That this General Synod authorize Blessing and Celebration of a Civil Marriage for use where permitted by the local Ordinary.

EXPLANATORY NOTE/BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

General Synod 2001 called for a service of Blessing and Celebration of a Civil Marriage. A short form for this liturgy has been in use since its publication in the Book of Occasional Celebrations, however this text has not been brought forward to the General Synod for authorization. Faith, Worship and Ministry worked in this Triennium to develop a more fulsome liturgical celebration for the blessing of a civil marriage. This text was brought to the Council of General Synod in 2003 and adopted with minor amendments.

The proposed service is found in the documents section of the Faith Worship and Ministry Report to General Synod. (Report 006 document 9)
