Worship at General Synod 2004

It is a pleasure to share with you the plans for worship together as we prepare to gather together in St. Catharines, from across this vast and wonderful country. I ask you also to refer to the Worship Statement which has been sent in an earlier mailing with the GS Times. It sets out the understanding of worship which has guided our planning.

The Opening Service will take place in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, on the campus of Brock University, on Friday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. The theatre is located in close proximity to our residence rooms and local volunteers will assist you to find the theatre. The Acting Primate, The Most Rev’d David Crawley, will preside at the celebration of The Holy Eucharist and will deliver his Acting Primatial Opening Address at the conclusion of the liturgy.

Members of General Synod are invited to join in forming a Choir, or to play an instrument, for our time together. More details will be available when you register in St. Catharines.

Morning Prayer will be held daily (except Sunday and Monday) at 9:15 a.m. in the Plenary Hall.

Bible study will take place in Home Groups, which meet each day (except Sunday) from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. in a room assigned in the residence.

The Eucharist will be celebrated on Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the lunch break, either in Plenary or at Pond Inlet, a room on campus a short walk from the Plenary Hall.

Night Prayer will take place most evenings in the Plenary Hall.

On Sunday morning, May 30, The Feast of Pentecost, we will join with local congregations in the Niagara area for worship. We will be visiting parishes in our Home Groups, and individual parishes will help facilitate our travel to their churches, will feed us lunch, and will bring us back to Brock!

The Primatial Electoral Eucharist:

One of the most significant agenda items at this, the 37 th General Synod is the election of a new Primate for our Church. We will gather on Monday, morning, May 31, again in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, to begin this important work by celebrating the Eucharist together. The Acting Primate will preside and preach.

Pastoral Care

Bishop Bob Bennett of the Diocese of Huron is heading up a Pastoral Care/Chaplaincy Team which will be available to any member of Synod who seeks a listening ear, prayer or an opportunity to sit with someone for awhile. The members of the team will be identified with an armband or a ribbon and be introduced at the beginning of Synod.

Our closing worship takes on a very special format as we will gather at Christ’s Church Cathedral, in Hamilton, on the afternoon of Friday, June 4 to celebrate the Eucharist together and to be present for the Installation of our new Primate. It will be a wonderful service of witness to the world; The Most Rev’s Frank Griswold, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the USA, will be out guest Preacher. The new Primate will preside at the Eucharist. After lunch at Brock on Friday, we will be taken by bus to Hamilton and, after the Service of Installation, the Diocese of Niagara will host a special banquet for us at Liuna Station, a very short walk from the Cathedral.

The members of the Worship Committee and I are excited about what lies ahead and we look forward to worshiping together with you in St. Catharines and in Hamilton.

May God bless all that we do at this Synod.

The Very Reverend Peter Wall
Chair, General Synod Worship Committee
